A reminder to review the kbin.run terms of service [TOS]

Hi everyone, I saw a conversation on a certain magazine about the wording of kbin.run's terms of service. I'm not going to reply there because its unproductive and irrelevant to the conversation being discussed. I do; however, encourage everyone to (re)review the privacy policy and terms of service of the instance....

hi, kbin.run admin here, i wanted to confirm that the 429 and 500s you're seeing are not on kbin.run but fedia.io? thanks!

When I open kbin.run in the browser it tries to download a file "master.m3u8"

@13 is it still doing it? i just re-enabled server-side push updates (it's called mercure) that i've had disabled for the longest time... the timing seems about right when i was messing around with the configuration.

debounced Admin ,

@13 argh, which browser are you using? im on linux, firefox 122.0.1 and it's not happening. let me ask in the matrix chat with the other devs, this sounds familiar

debounced Admin , (edited )

@13 ok, i can replicate it now... its not mercure, but it's the auto media preview... that thread is trying to load a video that's not supported. can you disable this in the settings menu (gear icon) and hit the button at the top of the menu to "refresh the page" that should appear? we'll have to submit an Mbin issue for this...

debounced Admin ,

@13 i've created an issue for this bug: https://github.com/MbinOrg/mbin/issues/487

Haven't looked up the station's license to see how much power they could have been pushing, but if I were the "authorities", I'd definely be checking local hospitals for records of anyone coming in with mild to severe [RF] burns. With [low frequency] AM stations, the tower itself is basically the other half of the antenna electrically... probably lit them up like a Christmas tree.

We were so preoccupied with whether or not we could that we didn't stop to think if we should.

i can sort of understand at&t being at&t as they continue to piss hundreds of millions away on subpar investments while continuing to bitch about being poor and needing government handouts to make the boo-boos hurt less, but what does google have to gain from this? and i could have swore that at some point it was mentioned starlink is/was going to use google data centers as PoPs for their ground stations, but maybe i'm miss remembering...

People who can don't get mad and just go with the flow, how do you do it?

Here recently it seems like everything just gets under my skin so quickly and easily. It's not that I get mad and take it out on others, it's just the fact that I'm constantly annoyed and stressed. Something as simple as the dogs tracking some mud through the house will just ruin my mood. I know some people who would just laugh...

prozac

though i'll be honest, the several months of dialing-in the initial dosage were an absolute hell, but once it starts working... like hot damn, a whole new person. i can't function without it, but everyone reacts differently to SSRIs... so YMMV and it's definitely something to consult a physician about if you're serious.

Recent unintentional 500s on upvotes (and maybe boosts), my bad... sorry!

I was live testing a fix for a different 500 issue and I might have accidentally caused 500s to be generated elsewhere... should be stable now. If the site is acting stupid, there's a 99% chance it's because I'm either live testing a code change or messing with something else in the background....

hmm, that sounds like a kbin "bug" that's been around for a long time... we ought to change how this is handled in Mbin since I don't think we should throw a 500 for this condition, a better message like: "i've never seen this instance before, give me a second to pull it in" instead of giving up right away... or make it asynchronous so the user doesn't have to hit the follow button again.

@e-five, what do you think?

Updates on Interstellar kbin app: account login, voting, subscriptions, and more (kbin.social)

If you haven't been following the Interstellar magazine, I've added a lot of functionality since the last thread here, including views for magazines/users/domains, better navigation for wider screens, QoL additions (like the @ button to reveal originating domain, inspired by Artemis), and a lot of different bug/functionality...

debounced Admin ,

i fixed a problem with the the oauth cert permissions on kbin.run that was preventing user logins, fwiw. i tested out the latest AppImage of Interstellar and it seems to auth just fine now!

I agree, I'm not into outright censorship based on my own personal opinions or beliefs. Our users have the ability to block instances/domains if they wish. Really the only reason I would defederate from other instances is if there were highly illegal activities taking place (as dictated by US law) or if an actor is being technically disruptive (spam and other malicious payloads).

Now that said, I will monitor this closely because Threads is going to be a beast in size by comparison to us and other small instances... it could very well end up heavily taxing my server/bandwidth/storage requirements. I may be forced to defederate and/or limit Threads AP activity if I find that it's overloading my infrastructure/$$$ on storage fees, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

amen, i love EndeavorOS. i've jettisoned all Windows support in my house and anything that needs Windows gets put into an isolated VLAN that can't talk to anything else. and for the archaic business crap that only has a Windows release, CrossOver is a godsend. same CodeWeavers devs that made Proton and is essentially Wine Premium.

debounced Admin ,
debounced avatar

it wouldn't hurt. i wish my work would just give me a VM to remote into instead of dealing with it on my network, at least in my case all the EDA tools I use are ran on Linux anyway... my last employer put so much spyware "security" software on their work issued laptops that Suricata on my router/firewall would light up like a Christmas tree. no idea what it was trying to do without breaking out Wireshark and analyzing captures, but that's when i said enough is enough... can't be trusted.

[UPGRADE] Early migration to a "new" server and re-optimization complete

Sorry for any site interruptions/instability last night into this morning (CST), but I ran into a bit of a problem with a recent Mbin update that was causing excessively high CPU usage with the message workers that is looking more and more like an upgrade that went rogue... or it's the only explanation I have since everything is...

Another round of performance optimizations completed

I spent a fair amount of time this weekend optimizing the interaction between NGINX, PHP, Symfony framework tuning handles, Postgres and Cloudflare before I give up on this server and move kbin.run to a more powerful machine. The big change that will improve performance: I'm force rewriting the caching headers on images that are...

lmao, gotta make sure people read my entire post!

this VM host is old and tired, so it has been like squeezing blood from a stone to eek out any more performance. my plan right now is to move it to a faster server once the service is up for renewal; i paid a year in advance to get the best rate, so it'll be a couple of months before that happens.

this is a known /kbin bug that we need to fix and it sounds like there is something in the pipeline to address is. but in the meantime, I marked the specific post in question as NSFW. please use the report feature under "More" if you run across future any other misbehaving thumbnails and i'll mark them NSFW.

[RESOLVED] Incident 20231108 9:21 PM CST

The Chicago, IL data center where kbin.run is hosted out of is having intermittent connectivity issues. Service appears to be working now, but further interruptions may occur while the network admins troubleshoot the problem(s). I will mark the issue resolved once I receive the all clear....

Are we going to be adding the updates that Ernest is creating and some of the features are stuff that I know I've suggested that we should do as well as are just great quality of life updates.

debounced Admin ,
debounced avatar

@SamXavia yep, we're cautiously porting over the PRs from kbin to Mbin. i like running the big changes in a test environment for at least a day to check for any stability problems and then update the production instance if things look ok.

debounced Admin ,
debounced avatar

we're making it super easy for any existing kbin instance to migrate to Mbin, just a matter of pointing git at the new repo, pull, and update as usual.

debounced Admin ,
debounced avatar

Mbin's API is 100% compatible with kbin as of today, so @hariette should have little to no issues pointing Artemis at Mbin instances.

[REMINDER] Magazines with 0 subscribers will receive 0 updates

At least 1 user needs to be subscribed to a magazine in order for it to receive federated updates, so keep that in mind after searching for a new magazine/community. I get subscribed to everything by default (hopefully Mbin will change this behavior in the future), so if it's not a magazine I want to see in my feed I will...

debounced OP Admin ,
debounced avatar

I have, but I'm leaning more towards submitting a code change to Mbin's default behavior so that any new mags searched make the instigator the default subscriber and they can choose to unsubscribe if they wish.

I don't see a reason to load down the instance if someone doesn't think it's important enough to stay subscribed and I don't allow logged out users to search for any new federated content as it is, so this "enhancement" can be an extension of that. At least this is where my head is at in how to manage user experience (junk polluting /all) vs. space & horse power requirements.

debounced OP Admin ,
debounced avatar

it's now part of Mbin, https://github.com/MbinOrg/mbin/pull/237 :-)

Has anyone noticed an improvement in image loading?

I've offloaded the image processing to a separate process/server and I've been wondering, has anyone noticed any improvement in image loading over the past few days? I don't like overcomplicating the site's configuration, but I was hoping this change boosts the performance at least a little....

debounced OP Admin ,
debounced avatar

yep, this is a known bug caused by one of the recent updates. downvoting will also cause the same/related error, it's under investigation by one of the devs.

debounced OP Admin ,
debounced avatar

i boosted you and downvoted myself, fix seems to work!

debounced OP Admin ,
debounced avatar

I guess I'm a little biased since I'm one of the Mbin maintainers, but we've had two significant releases with over 200 PRs that are not part of /kbin. We're selectively picking /kbin enhancements/code changes that we want in Mbin (and rewriting the ones we don't like or doing something completely different), but I think the damage is done and our vision for Mbin is not compatible with /kbin. I'm not going to go into all the drama behind the scenes, but I think it's best if Mbin and /kbin go their separate ways.
