Might want to consider that Ukraine is a totalitarian regime that kidnaps people off the street to send them to die at the front. Not exactly surprising that a lot of people wouldn't be comfortable speaking their minds openly. The only people who want this war to keep going are westerners who are cynically using the people of Ukraine as cannon fodder in a proxy war with Russia.

@yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

What cover up operation? There are videos of people being grabbed off the street and gang pressed into army all over the internet. Even western media reports on this now. There is also no free press in Ukraine, all of it was shut down a long time ago along with opposition political parties. I can't say why you personally are so ignorant, but this information is readily available.

Sounds like you need to educate yourself because this is frankly embarrassing.

The idea of running some sort of an insurgency has been floated around a lot. I agree that it's a dumb idea and I imagine it will backfire spectacularly because Ukrainian nationalists will be resentful of the west when the war is lost. They will blame the west for not full supporting Ukraine and for using them as a battering ram against Russia. Europe might end up seeing a sharp rise in terrorism in the near future. Also worth remembering that a lot of the weapons sent to Ukraine ended up on the black market, and likely in the hands of far right cells across Europe.

I'd say capitalism is an evolution of feudalism that was facilitated by the industrial evolution. However, the two systems share most of the negative aspects, and in later stages of capitalism differences become increasingly negligible.

yogthos ,
@yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

Well, specifically what changed was that under feudalism power in society was determined solely by birth. Either you were born a noble or you weren't. Capitalism was rich merchants overthrowing the nobles and democratizing the oppression of the workers. I do agree that for the most part it is an iteration of the same system though.

yogthos ,
@yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

I agree, late stage capitalism starts to look a lot like feudalism because all the wealth ends up being concentrated in the hands of a few people, but there are some differences in the way the two systems function.

yogthos ,
@yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

I agree that there are more similarities than differences, and in most tangible aspects two systems behave in a similar fashion. Both are fundamentally predicated on a small privileged class of people living off the backs of the working majority.

I mean we can just look at Germany and how things are going with the transition right now https://thehill.com/blogs/pundits-blog/energy-environment/291963-why-renewables-alone-cannot-meet-our-energy-needs/

There are also lots of studies, e.g. https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S2542435119302144

yogthos OP ,
@yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

I gave some sources in the other reply, perhaps we can stick with a single thread if we have to keep this going?

yogthos OP ,
@yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

Not sure what you're basing this grand assertion that most studies show the transition is feasible and economically viable. For every study that shows this, I can find you one that shows the opposite. In fact, as you admit, this is a new research topic with a lot of unknowns, and we are in a middle of a global crisis that threatens our whole civilization. Using proven technologies that are known to work seems like a far better thing to do than to experiment in a middle of a crisis.

yogthos OP ,
@yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

The worst that will happen is that our civilization collapses because we failed to transition away from the use of fossil fuels. Buying energy from France is the best case scenario, using more coal and other dirty fuels if the transition fails is another very likely scenario. And once again, I'll note that there are alternatives to uranium such as thorium. The only reason uranium is used traditionally is because it doubles up as weapons material. Thorium reactors are cheaper, safer, and don't require water cooling. Why not explore all options, and find a mix of solutions that work reliably. In a situation where there are many unknowns, it's generally best not to put all the eggs in one basket.

yogthos OP ,
@yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

Every technology has pros and cons. The rational thing to do is to weigh those against each other instead of simply pointing out what the negatives are. Meanwhile, there are also CO2 emissions involved in producing solar panels or wind turbines.

The reality is that majority of western countries continue to miss their pledges to transition from fossil fuels. Given past precedent, I would bet against Germany accomplishing its stated goals by 2038. IMHO gambling with the fate of humanity for ideological reasons is unethical.

that's right, what Germans really fear is that GDR will make a comeback.
