Holo had been calling herself a wise wolf up to this point, but we finally get to see that wisdom come into play this episode. She managed to add a 50% premium to Lawrence's pelt sale through what amounts to a bit of apple perfume paired with a compelling story. If you ever find yourself in a workshop or seminar about marketing, you will often hear about how the story of a brand or product is one of the most important aspects of marketing. If people buy your story, then they will buy your product. Turns out that is also true in Lawrence's world.

Finally, turns out that the silver content is being reduced in the coinage. I was trying to figure out how Lawrence might profit from a devalued currency, but was having trouble. It wasn't until he said that he was heading to the Milone Trading Company that I had an idea. Essentially, what is happening is that the currency is being devalued. Countries in our world will intentionally devalue their currency for a couple reasons, but the primary one is to make imports more expensive and domestically produced goods cheaper on an international market thereby boosting their exports. China and Brazil are two examples of countries that have strategically devalued their currency with this in mind.

The important part of this is that the Milone Trading Company is a foreign company. So, most of their goods are being imported from abroad. I think that Lawrence is going to buy up imported goods now from Milone and then sell them later after the currency has been further devalued and imported goods are more expensive. The other idea I had is that he might be trying to sell the devaluation information to Milone as they would surely stand to have their business heavily impacted by this.

Anyway, I hope we see more of Lawrence's money changer friend. He was fun (@rikka):

This is a discussion thread for episode 3 of the new Spice and Wolf anime. If you hadn't heard, the show is currently airing and is a re-adaptation of the story rather than a continuation from the previous show (even though the main voice cast is returning). It's still early in the season (probably 24-25 episodes, so plenty of time to catch up and join in the weekly episode threads!

You've got some good suggestions already. Here are a couple that I think are good for somebody that is fairly new to the deep rabbit hole of anime tropes/conventions:

  • Mushishi - My personal favorite anime of all time. Very contemplative and melancholy. Don't binge this, just watch an episode before bed or something like that, and let it sit in your brain.
  • Frieren: Beyond Journey's End - This just recently finished airing its first season and was excellent in every respect. Classic high fantasy story (think Lord of the Rings) which follows the near-immortal elf Frieren in her travels. Very approachable for previously non-anime watchers.
  • Cowboy Bebop - An all-time classic space western following some bounty hunters.
  • One Punch Man - A humorous take on the superhero genre. If you are looking for something more comedy oriented, this is a decent starting point.

Good lord, 2640 episodes with a total runtime of over 37 days.

I also just checked, and these shows (the ones still airing anyway) are able to have episode discussion threads requested from the bot if there are people that want to discuss them. Not sure how big the Chibi Maruko-chan audience might be in this community, but the capability is there if they exist and are looking for a home.

I am glad with the way they split it up as well. It helps keep the different story lines fresh in our memories. The back half of this episode with the Merchant Guild was as infuriating as I remember from the web novel. Makoto did a good job keeping his cool. If I was an OP protagonist, I think it would be all too easy to just fall back on obliterating the city block to make the problem go away.

wjs018 Mod ,
@wjs018@ani.social avatar

Two halves to this episode. First we get to see the individual tournament arc. We get a couple nice moments where Makoto's students get to flex a bit and really mess with the Hopeleys heir. Something I liked about this was Princess Lily. I mentioned last week that I felt kind of bad for her as she seems to mostly be doing her best with the hand she has been dealt (human trash hero Tomoki). She shows her flexible thinking and practicality again this episode in how she is able to recognize the improved but non-traditional methods of Makoto's students.

The second half of this episode is an uncharacteristic humbling moment for Makoto. The merchant guild representative completely outwits and corners Makoto. It is a sign of Makoto's inexperience that he hadn't thought that other, established trading companies wouldn't put up any kind of barrier they can to prevent Kuzunoha's ascendancy. We see it in the modern world as well, large established companies using tools like regulatory capture to block out startups or slow their growth.

Fortunately for Makoto, there is a whole untapped market where the Merchant's Guild has no power: the demons. It's free real estate!

This past week saw the return of Konosuba (officially). It was great to have the gang back together again. I enjoyed the Megumin spinoff series, but the group chemistry between these goofballs is just so great.

I have continued to enjoy Bartender as a chill out before bed series. I have also been impressed by the visuals in both Go! Go! Loser Ranger! as well as Reincarnated as the 7th Prince. Time will tell if these studios can keep it up over the course of the season. I feel scarred from Zom 100 still...

Overall, I am not watching as much anime this season compared to last, which is letting me do more meta things for the community. This has meant lots of bug fixes for rikka, updating and cleaning up the wiki, and finally selecting and creating clips to post.

I currently have 15 different webms in my folder that are ready to upload, but I am going to try to space them out so that I am not just spamming the community. I will upload the next one on Tuesday. If you have read this far, then you can have some input as to what will be next. Cast a vote below for the clip you want to see next (three chosen at random from my folder):

  • The Wind Rises
  • Kino's Journey (2017)
  • Brave Bang Bravern!

We are hot on the heels of the second member of Ars's retinue. Seeing the early part of this story again after reading quite a bit of the manga really gives me some perspective on this story and the characters. I am going to put the rest of my spiel about this behind a spoiler tag, but it isn't super spoilery other than broad strokes that are already apparent in this episode. However, feel free to skip over it if you so choose.

Rant about Ars with mild spoilers

Something I have written about before for this series is that the cast of characters is interesting...except Ars. He manages to build this superstar team of prodigies around him and somehow magically inspires their utmost loyalty. If you actually take a step back and ask yourself what about Ars inspires such loyalty...there isn't much.

Each member of his group will follow the same basic pattern: he shows them one act of kindness or talks about his ideals in some way to show he isn't like the other nobles...and that's it. Sure, he is nice to them and treats them well, but he isn't the only one doing that. At this point in the story, Rietz is already highly respected by everybody for his martial prowess, he doesn't need Ars's patronage to lead a prosperous and successful life. He has managed to, through his actions, overcome the racial stereotyping that had kept him in poverty before meeting Ars.

Meanwhile, Ars, despite being the noble that has been studying books since he could talk thanks to isekai knowledge, is now being lectured on his own country's history by Rietz. I think that if Ars was given moments to shine or talents of his own, this kind of loyalty given to him would make more sense. Anyways, end rant...

To summarize the rant above in a spoiler-free way: I really like the characters in this show other than Ars. That includes liking the focus of this episode, Charlotte. One thing I really appreciate about her in this episode is that her mistrust and even hatred of nobility makes total sense! Her whole life has been a struggle for survival, of course she would hate a noble that hasn't known any of the hardships she has had to face. I had thought I recognized the VA for Charlotte, but looking on AniList, I haven't watched anything else she has done. I really liked Charlotte's voice in this episode.

As for a screenshot this episode, I thought it was quite funny when Rietz got a bit philosophical about economics with this line (@rikka):

I had fun with parts of this episode and then other parts were quite dark. The fun parts were our poor Fighter D doing his best to keep his cool. He even came face to face with Red Keeper and managed to keep his cover intact. However, it might have been too early for him to impersonate somebody he only barely knows as he was very quickly found out by Suzukiri.

https://ani.social/pictrs/image/7adaa50a-563f-4fbd-a0ef-e55322b96cac.webp

Speaking of Suzukiri...in last week's thread I said "this character definitely gives off underhanded villainess vibes" and it seems like I was close. She's got those yandere vibes, and she's got the knife skills to back them up. We don't yet know what her motivation for taking on the Dragon Keepers might be, but at least our poor Fighter D lives to see another day...

Unlike Fighter F, who gets perma-killed by Red Keeper. Just like always, Red Keeper knows the #1 rule is to always look cool. So, just like any other cool guy, he never looks at explosions:

Looks like the early leaks of Konosuba didn't impact its ranking coming into the official premiere as it tops the chart to open the season. Also, AC's penchant for romance seems to be alive and well with Date a Live at number 2. With all the new premieres happening, it is nice to see Delicious in Dungeon in the top 10 as it is continuing from last season and isn't going to get additional hype from a debut. A surprise for me was Laid-Back camp down at . Perhaps comfy SOL isn't AC's jam.

I really enjoyed this episode. Some great humor and some great monsters this episode. I think I connected a lot with the monsters this episode because I once ran a D&D campaign in which a dryad and a flock of cockatrice played significant roles for part of the journey. So, seeing them both in one episode was fun. Also, I feel like I inadvertently posted my basilisk clip at just the right time as a preview for the cockatrice segment. I swear I haven't read the source!

Two jokes really got me this episode. The first was grandpa Senshi sitting Chilchuck down to give him the talk (and really grandpa Senshi in general feeling like he is surrounded by kids). Second was Marcy turning into stone while doing a tsukkomi. If you aren't familiar with it, a tsukkomi gesture is something you see a lot in Japanese humor and comes from a specific type of standup comedy called manzai. In this situation, Laios was filling the boke role by preparing her to turn into stone.

I am curious what the rules around magic are in this world. Is there a reason that Laios is able to learn magic, but Chilchuck/Senshi can't? Is it ideological differences? racial differences? too busy thinking about food to care? It was interesting that Laios was able to see the ghosts of the city while he was on his magic trip with the pretty colors. I feel like if Laios was a bit more observant he might be able to piece more of the story together between the paintings, the interaction with the magician, and now the ghosts. Alas...he is too busy doing...Laios things I guess.

Finally, I just want to say that homemade sauerkraut is delicious, but it takes absolutely forever to get that way. When my family made it, we would let it go for at least a month before diving in.

Senshi-antibodies

This part was really funny to me too. I work with antibodies professionally, so I can't tell you how many times I have seen somebody have a version of how an antibody works in their slides. If they were as fun as the Senshi-antibodies, then I wouldn't zone out as easily I think.

Marcille x Laios

Noo! I didn't know I needed it until a couple episodes ago, but I won't accept anything other than Marcille x Falin. I think people are sleeping on the chemistry this episode with Laios x Senshi.

Goth-Marcy would be mega cute

Adventure Time had a goth Marcy, but she was a vampire instead of an elf:

I have been reading the LNs recently and am partway through LN5 (the events depicted in the movie). The whole sequence here with the monster that acts like an injured girl happens while the gang is on their way to the Crimson Demon Clan in the LNs. I had enjoyed that sequence, so when I realized it was cut out of the movie I was sad I wouldn't get to see it animated. However, it seems like they shifted it to after the Crimson Demon Clan arc instead.

Finally, I think that was the OP that the first episode ended with. I liked the song, but the animation really went hard during the OP. Lots of times where I would pause and flip through by frames to catch it all.

Yeah, this latest batch of federation delays seems to be a series of bugs interacting with each other. However, the primary cause seems to be a bug in kbin in which it is flooding out tons and tons of activities (votes, downvotes, follows, etc.) repeatedly, seemingly stuck in a loop (relevant post from an .nz instance admin). The world admins put a filter in place on their firewall to block it a couple hours ago and the federation seems to be catching back up. I just checked and right now ani.social is 4.5 hours behind world, down from a peak of 11.5. Due to a different, unrelated lemmy issue, small increases in latency to the world instance server (located in Finland) can cause much slower federation (relevant github issue). So, instances located close by in the EU seem to have been able to handle this better than other regions.

Having not seen the original, I was a bit surprised at Holo's voice at first (last episode). Her voice was softer and she is cheekier than I had thought based solely on the character design. With this episode, I didn't think about the VAs at all, but was instead just fully on board with the characters.

wjs018 Mod ,
@wjs018@ani.social avatar

Slow episode this week (feel that will be a theme with this show). We get to really spend some time with our two leads as they talk about life and the world around them. Holo's bit about how the farmers she used to watch over didn't care about time felt very relatable to me. I have some family members that run a farm and they often say similar things about events like daylight savings, holidays, etc. Basically that the cows/corn doesn't care about any of that, so they can't either. They just have to do things according to nature's schedule.

With this talk about currency exchange and arbitrage, I get the feeling that we are going to be having lots of economic talk in this show. It is a bit surprising to me that this wine merchant hadn't ever bartered with goods before. Perhaps since he deals in a luxury good, his clients are wealthy enough to afford the convenience of hard currency?

Finally, just wanted to say that this screenshot out of context is hilarious:

Finally, the main thing that I think this series will need to deliver on in order to keep people watching is the magic visuals. This episode was respectable in that regard. The compound spell that he used to punch a hole in the sky was animated very nicely (even if the camera was so shaky I couldn't get a nice shot of it). Also, the ki effects that Tao used were really nice as well and felt like an obvious reference to a Dragonball inspiration. Lloyd's magic might be a bit too much for Grim yet at this point. It will take some time to get used to (@rikka).

Slower episode this week with lots of dialog. This series is all about having tons of different plot threads going at one time. This time, they have brought a lot of them together in one place; the school tournament. Everybody is interested in Kuzunoha for various reasons.

I almost feel bad for Princess Lily. She is a ruthless schemer, yes....but she has also been paired, through no fault of her own, with one of the worst humans alive, Tomoki. She has to somehow try to keep Tomoki happy and fighting for her while at the same time gathering military power to continue the war against demons. I think she demonstrates her practical way of thinking when she seems to abandon the idea of pursuing Kuzunoha further after Root's warning, trusting that he is giving her a warning for her own good.

As for another power player that is present, I don't remember how this exactly played out in the WN, but I got the feeling watching it now that Laurel gave up its pursuit of Kuzunoha too easily. He is clearly lying to them and they know it...but I guess they might not want to press the point and end up offending him. I am guessing that we won't get into the Laurel arc of the story this season, but it would probably be a future season 3. This is kind of laying some of the initial groundwork.

Coming up, looks like we are going to dive into the tournament. I hope they don't draw out the tournament too much, but if they really go hard with the animation it could be worth it. Time will tell!

I think your reading of the language is correct. At the very least, the two versions of Japanese have diverged enough over time that they aren't super comparable anymore, beyond things like individual kanji meanings.

I think that the Hopleys are falling prey to an aristocratic form of natural selection. In this episode, not only do we see Laurel decide to back off Makoto, but also Princess Lily after she is warned by False. They are both smart enough to realize that if they push too hard on this person, it could easily be the end of them. However, the current Hopleys heir seems to lack the tact or intuition to back off a self-destructive path for the sake of revenge for some perceived slight.

So, if you aren't at all familiar with the source from this series, I would completely forgive you for assuming this is as generic an isekai as they come. The most novel thing about the story after this first episode so far is that our MC doesn't come from Japan, but instead comes from a different fantasy world. Other than that, this is a cookie-cutter, summoned to another world, discarded as useless, but actually super OP story that you can find anywhere.

All that said, I actually really like the source for this series because of where it goes starting next episode.

What genre is this show really?

You might have been tricked into thinking this is going to be a harem show due to the female-laden cast so far. However, our MC breaks that mold and is a devoted, monogamous partner (and the relationship is a pretty great one). This story is a much better romance than it is an isekai.

Edit: All synced back up

Hey all, bit of a meta update. Currently there are ongoing issues with federation between lemmy.world and ani.social (as well as a bunch of other instances that are falling behind .world). Currently, ani.social is about 9 hours behind world in federation activities. However, the reverse isn't true. Activities on ani.social are federating out to world promptly like normal. So, it is entirely possible that community members on lemmy.world might see things like duplicate posts that no other members of the community might see.

Going forward, this issue should resolve itself. The root cause actually comes down to a couple different bugs combining for a worst-case scenario. The flood of activity that world is federating out is being caused by a bug in kbin in which some users' actions are being repeatedly performed over and over again, much faster than instances can process those actions. Combining this flood of activity with a bug in lemmy in which federation activities are sensitive to small increases in latency between servers yields an issue in which instances that are not geographically close to lemmy.world (in Finland), are unable to keep up.

I am not a dev by trade, but have been lurking in the matrix channels where these issues have been discussed. The good news is that lemmy.world has temporarily blocked traffic from kbin.social in order to stem the tide. However, this essentially prevents kbin users from interacting with the largest lemmy instance which is not ideal.

In any case, just wanted to update people on why some weird things have been happening the past day or so.

wjs018 OP Mod ,
@wjs018@ani.social avatar

I have been keeping a close eye on it to make sure that shows are getting disabled correctly if nobody has commented on the previous episode. I personally feel like the volume of posts has been a little high here in the beginning of the season, but that is partially being made worse by the very slow news cycle following Anime Japan 2024. Something I have the option of doing is enabling rikka to post poster art as an image for the discussion threads (I can swap it out to a screenshot following the same procedure as currently). It would at least add some visual variation to the wall of discussion posts. I might try enabling that for a day or two and see if there is any feedback.
