My is brief/won't spoil, to spread good, great, spectacular far & wide.

A HAUNTING ON THE HILL by Elizabeth Hand is fine, as a "haunted house" book. It's competent & relatively engaging AS LONG AS YOU DON'T COMPARE IT TO THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE.

The tone, plot, & writing is not at the same level- not even in the same neighborhood- as Jackson's. Hill House's horrors still walk alone.

Jackson is my favorite author. Hill House is my favorite book. It's masterful. It's tight. It's ambiguous & frightening. It's a perfect novel, & I have read a LOT of bks.

This HILL obvs has a high bar & I'm critical, but the author chose to write this "sequel." (Yes, the estate asked her to. She could've said no. Esp since her writing style is So. Totally. Different.)

I have fundamental problems w this book's existence & immense dissatisfaction at its execution.
