I’ve been working in construction for the past 11 years at this point with a few years before that in a part time role. I’m more than happy to lend whatever knowledge or insights I may have about work, life, or whatever....
I cannot keep my job. Firstly because I’m on FMLA (unpaid medical leave) for a mystery illness and I cannot guarantee that, even if finally diagnosed, I will be recovered by the 12 week maximum allotted....
I voluntarily changed jobs last year, even though I wanted to leave, I found it hard to convince myself to start searching for a new one. When it came to hand in my notice, even though I had already informed people I was leaving, actually sending in my notice was one of the most terrifying things I have done.
Change is hard, leaving an existing job for the unknown is scary. Even if you don’t like where you are now, you at least know what it is like. Concentrate on the reasons you want to leave, not why you think you should stay.
corporate sites make money by selling your info to advertisers and data brokers. Their goal is to keep you on the site and clicking links. Youtubers make money by people waiting their stuff; they are incentivized to clickbait for watches, some channels are very effective at this. I don’t know that you will fall into interesting things as there is no incentive in the algorithm for it. You have to seek it out, forums, small sites, blogs, small communities or instances here…

I never moved growing up, so only ever saw 1 dentist, I don’t really want to try to find one. I don’t want to be told my wisdom teeth need to come out; they don’t bother me. I only bleed a little when I do floss and I don’t eat/drink much sugar at all. Still though, Yea I need to suck it up and go.
I’m playing Cyberpunk 2077 and keep forgetting names. The database section helps but it can be tedious going back and forth when I’m reading emails and notes to see what is relevant. This isn’t just limited to Cyberpunk though. I feel like I run into this a lot with games. Any tips for getting names to stick?
I don’t know if I have any actual facial blindness, but I have a terrible time recognizing people. In tv shows, it takes me half a series to recognize the main characters by appearance alone. I think I recognize features of someone more than the person. I have terrible name recall to the point I don’t usually ask people their names because I know I’ll forget it almost immediately. I also almost never recognize people out of context.
Even with a good career and all the “adult milestones” I don’t feel like an actual adult. I feel like I’m pretending to know what I’m doing. Anyone else experience this?
I just went through airport security and was quite surprised how easy it was (relatively speaking). Didn’t have to go through a body scanner, didn’t have to separate liquids, didn’t have to take out my laptop, and my boarding pass wasn’t even scanned. Did some rules change? Is their thoroughness related to terrorist...
Some airports have fancy scanners that don’t require removing anything. For everything else, maybe you were marked for precheck or similar? Its only a trend when your return trip is the same.
I’m a big fan of standard time myself, the light in the morning helps me wake up. I usually don’t have a problem with the fall shift, but I’ve found myself slowly drifting my sleep back to saving time. I think it the near record highs in my area the past couple days. As a pedantic note, its saving time, no s, yes its really awkward to use.
I can’t remember the last time I played. Never really liked the aesthetics of the windows versions after 7. If I’m in the mood I use www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/…/mines.html That version never requires guessing. To give myself a challenge I try to do it without flagging the mines.
Edit: realized its the xp version I liked, 7 was ugly.
Lots of names, most of the pencil puzzles do. The first name I associated with that type was pic-a-pix. I might have come across a few unnamed before that time though. The Wikipedia page has the name as nonogram. The cross the streams variant has some extra rules, 1 contiguous region and no 2x2 full.
Cracking the Cryptic has shown me the wonders of variant sudoku. My personal favorite variant is thermo. Their GAS series is a good introduction, or jump right in at logic masters
I wouldn’t call their videos training, more of guided solving of easy to monstrously difficult puzzles. You solving is the training. As a warning, if you start enjoying solving the featured puzzles, your old sources might lose the allure they once had.
It was probably a year after I started watching before I started attempting the puzzles myself. It started with Mark’s videos that were under 45 min and Simon’s that were under 30. Now I think my limit is under 90 minutes for Simon, except pencil puzzles, I’ll try any of those. The video length can actually be a bad indicator of how difficult I find it. They both do math heavy puzzle really fast, and Simon has a knack with set theory.
They both worked in banking, so the math makes sense. For the sums I have a feel for most of the extremes and common ones, the triangular numbers, the maximum numbers, the missing or extra “ones” (4 digits that add up to 14, 4 digits for 11…). I usually just use the killer calculator for the other ones. At least on the desktop site its under the advanced settings.
That too is about my limit for set, although I might see the expanded ones too. As soon as Simon highlighted the cells in yesterdays feature he immediately knew it was set. I don’t know how he does it.
Last night I dreamt I was in a black void. I couldn’t see anything except for four white masks staring at me. Suddenly, they started screaming. It went on for some time until I finally woke up. Oddly enough, I could still hear their screams even with my eyes already wide open. The screaming wouldn’t stop until I fell asleep...
In my setting, I’m exposed to a lot of people day by day, and sometimes I meet people who are celebrating things I’ve never heard of before. It sometimes feels like a Spongebob episode, I’m talking to them and they might say something like “we’re observing national hat day today” or “we’re celebrating Hiawatha...
I’ll do a slightly different take. I grew up in a part of the US with a very high Jewish population, so the public schools got the Jewish high holidays off. I didn’t realize the schools being closed for those days was unusual until I moved away.
I believe it was off by necessity. So many teachers would be taking the day off anyway, there just wouldn’t be enough staff. A large amount of student would be taking the day off too.
Edit: My previous job and current both get the same federal holidays off per year. My previous job grouped them together. This created blocks like the Friday after thanksgiving and a week around Christmas. My current just takes them on the actual day.
Hello! I’m very out of touch with the furry community but I do know that there’s an ungodly amount of furry art that is created every day, and that number is continuing to increase. I’ve already got a career and my clumsy paws can barely draw a stick figure, so I’ve often wondered how artists can dedicate such time and...
It would be an interesting survey for sure. I am not an artists, but I will give my intuitions for the results I would expect. As a note, I mostly watch commissioners as I usually like a theme more than a style.
I would expect no money, at least at start. Think about it like athletes and sports, most do it for fun, a few do it for some money, and only a small amount make it as a living.
For those that try to do it full time, I see a lot of burn out. I have seen many try to do a drawing a day, sometimes as patreon rewards. This usually doesn’t lat more than a year before burnout. I’ve seen both transitioning to art as full time, usually after a patreon threshold, as well as moving art to a side hustle after getting a more traditional job for a more sustainable income.
Based on rough math, I have seen about $30 k - $115 k, although the higher end is usually game related. www.patreon.com/ruaidri , www.patreon.com/fek , www.patreon.com/caroo . Both ruaidri and caroo do commissions and other project as well. I usually see the transition to art full time after a sustainable income is achieved, not before.
See previous
I would assume networking is a big part of this. Trades with big artists, pushes on social media, presence at cons…
No real intuition, but I would assume if its doing commissions, its work, if its opening a patreon to continue working on personal projects, its not.
This is all just based on intuition and looking at it as a skill field like any other.
Hello y’all! I’ve always been interested in computers and programming for as long as i can remember, but recently i’ve decided to try to get into some of the deeper stuff behind that, into the wonderful world of electronics. Where should I start? What courses or books or youtube series should I consume? What are some...
I guess my question to you would be what are your goals? Do you have a project in mind? Do you have a technology, Analog, RF, MCU, FPGA, embedded design? I tend to learn a new thing better when I have an end goal or project to work towards. Depending on where your starting from, a pi might be a good place to start too. You still have most of the I/O and busses of an Arduino, but you can program everything in python, and you have the resources of a full OS too.
I’ll start off with your questions are a outside of what I know well. In general to do stuff with electronics, you don’t need to know the physics behind it, but the equations that pop out. Mainly V=IR, Almost everything goes back to that. Behind the scenes are lots and lots and lots of differential equations. Alpha Pheonix has a few good visualizations for resistance. He has a water based demo to visualize voltage and resistance, and a maze demo showing how electricity “finds” the path of least resistance. ElectroBoom probably won’t teach you too much, but can show some interesting things you can do. EEVblog has some good lectures. For specific applications Digikey and Texas Instruments have some basics, and there are many lectures online available.
I think the questions you asked are a little more on the physics side than the electrical side, and the specifics I think of as a dark art that comes with experience. In general most capacitors you see are blocking DC on an AC circuit, coupling capacitors that are smoothing the power circuit, or capacitors to control/tune something specific. Those control values would be given in a datasheet. Resistors are often going to be current limiting, voltage dividing, or “pulling” a high impedance signal. To design something you often just need the rule of thumb, and not necessarily a deep understanding of “why”.

Why does everything seem like clickbait?
Things are going downhill far too quickly. Attention grabbing headlines and no useful content from articles rule the internet....
