Corporate Spam Bot
@linux

is a booster-bot not really of linux, I would say ANTI-LINUX, and promotes constantly marketing by 3-4 corporations that seek to dominate linux and displace all alternatives.

@linux

Portrays as linux the products of IBM (systemd, Qt-corporation) and the distros that promote them by prohibiting alternatives.

BAN the corporate spam bot from all servers!

This is about what I expected from someone on a general purpose mastodon instance.

Spoiler: Mastodon isn't the only software that can interact with Mastodon

Meanwhile Rust: you might get an error at line 45 word 3 because it assumes variable foo is an int32 but it could be (whatever else idk), let's not compile this before you correct this by changing line 43 in this specific way. Here's the before and after code snippets so you can just copy-paste the fix.

why is anyone (who uses a bootloader) still not using grub?

backhdlp ,
@backhdlp@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

I don't think that answers my question

grub supports efi?

I only ever had real issues with GRUB during OS installation, and they were my fault.

(SOLVED) Linux Laptop Gets Stuck on Black Screen After Suspending, No Way to Use Unless Restarted With Power Button

Recently bought a new laptop that comes with an AMD Radeon gpu and installed OpenSuse Tumbleweed on it which I had installed on my previous laptop as well but never had issues with suspending and resuming. However, with the new laptop, I am unable to resume after suspending or closing the lid unless I force it to shut down by...

Can you check dmesg and/or journald? What model Laptop is it?

backhdlp ,
@backhdlp@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

sudo dmesg | less and something with journalctl (not sure because I don't use that currently). There should be some other logs you can check in /var/log too, kern.log sounds useful (though that might just come from sysklogd).

you can do some things to be able to enable it again once you're set up.

I feel like every use case they showcase is useless if you remember the commands. And if you don't know a command, the classic googling until you find something that works usually does the trick.

Oh right, webkit (I seem to be bad at understanding the words I'm reading). I love that most modern web engines are just forks of KHTML

people will read stable and instantly comment debian

Jokes aside, given that you said in a comment that it's for non-tech-savvy people, I'd say Linux Mint, partially just because it will look familiar if they've seen any Windows PC.

There are some BSDers that unironically consider Linux too mainstream.

Apply personal patches when running pacman -Syu?

There's a few packages that I use that I have created personal patches for. When one of these packages gets updated I need to manually change the PKGBUILD to the new version, SHA, etc. Is there any way to have a local patch applied to a package every time a new version of the package is release?

backhdlp ,
@backhdlp@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

I think pacman hooks could help you

backhdlp ,
@backhdlp@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

I'm not very familiar with them, I mostly just know they exist. https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Pacman#Hooks has information on them

I also just found this wiki page https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Patching_packages btw, might help maybe

Changing domain on existing Mastodon server question

So I know, I know you're not really supposed to change the domain of an already existing Mastodon server. But I did anyway and set the previous domain as alt domain in config. However, to see content of accounts I previously followed, I need to keep the old domain running. With a redirect in place to the new domain it breaks...

backhdlp ,
@backhdlp@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

I read a bit ago here that other Mastodon instances will think it's a new instance with new users (who coincidentally have the same content as the old users)

backhdlp ,
@backhdlp@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

I don't understand the people who say it's long, like no it isn't, 1:15:24 is a completely reasonable (if not even a bit short) time for the topic.

How different is Gentoo's new binary package system, compared to Arch Linux?

It was announced late last year that Gentoo is now offering binary versions of their packages. I’ve always had an interest in Gentoo, but the need to compile everything has always turned me away from it. I run Arch because it gives me the sense that I have more control of my system, when compared to other distros like Ubuntu,...

backhdlp ,
@backhdlp@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

I've been using Gentoo for a bit less than a month now. Installing the binary version of a package can easily be done by providing one or two flags to emerge. The binary packages are compiled pretty generic, to work with most systems, so you lose out on most of the compilation level control.

rufus isn't a website.

It boils down to them having no idea what they're doing, asking for help with almost every tiny thing, and cluttering forums with basic questions that have been answered thousands of times already.

I only recommend Linux to people who I think could actually use it with little help.

backhdlp ,
@backhdlp@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

I recommend it to the people I have faith in.
